PayPal, Mastercard, Visa, Amex suspend all services in Russia

PayPal and each of the major card schemes have shut down all services in Russia in an escalation of financial sanctions that go beyond just targeted banks.

Mastercard and Visa block Russian banks from their networks

Cards issued outside the country will also not work at Russian merchants or ATM’s. The statement issued by Mastercard said ”We don’t take this decision lightly’. Both Visa and Mastercard have pledged two million dollars toward humanitarian relief funds for Ukraine.

The payment giant Paypal has also cited “violent military aggression in Ukraine” as the reason to shut down its service in Russia.

American Express suspends operations in Russia and Belarus, joining other credit card giants

American Express said on Sunday it was suspending all operations in Russia and Belarus, joining a growing number of Western corporations to boycott business there over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. American Express follows US counterparts Visa and Mastercard, which announced a suspension of their Russian operations the previous day, as well as payments company PayPal Holdings Inc.
